What Is Lesbian Visibility Week — and Why It Matters
This years theme is "Celebrating Rainbow Families"
Lesbian Visibility Week is a global campaign dedicated to celebrating lesbians and queer women, promoting their stories, and raising awareness of the unique challenges they face in society. It runs every year during the last week of April, with Lesbian Visibility Day landing on April 26.
Founded in the UK in 2020 by Linda Riley, Publisher and CEO of DIVA Media Group — Europe’s leading brand for LGBTQ+ women and nonbinary people — Lesbian Visibility Week was created in response to ongoing underrepresentation and discrimination within both mainstream culture and even within LGBTQ+ spaces. The goal? To amplify voices too often left out of the conversation, and to build solidarity among women-loving-women and allies alike.
While lesbians have long been on the frontlines of activism, culture, and community building, they’ve also frequently been overlooked, misunderstood, or erased — particularly Black lesbians, trans lesbians, disabled lesbians, and older women in the community.
Lesbian Visibility Week isn’t just about being seen — it’s about being valued, respected, and included. It’s a call to action to uplift stories, dismantle stereotypes, and make space for joy and connection.
So whether you're sharing your truth, learning someone else's, or just showing support — this week is for visibility with purpose.
