We need Protections, Not Special Ambassadors

We don’t need “Special Ambassadors” for Hollywood, we need protections

‘As Trump appoints celebrity “ambassadors” to “save Hollywood,” his administration dismantles vital Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion programs.

It’s official, we are in for another round of Trump as President, and believe me, I’m just as scared as you are.

We’ve already seen some of the stuff he and his cabinet has done, such as Elon Musk doing the Nazi salute twice in a row and the executive orders Trump signed on the first day. We are in for a scary next four years.

Just before Trump retook office, he handpicked vocal celebrity supporters of his to “save Hollywood.”

Trump appointed Jon Voight, Sylvester Stallone, and Mel Gibson as “special ambassadors” to Hollywood.

Suppose you aren’t familiar with these three senior citizens. In that case, you would probably know Gibson and Stallone from their movies, such as Braveheart, The Passion of the Christ, and Rocky, or in Voight’s case, you’d recognize his daughter, Angelina Jolie, before you’d recognize him.

The fact that I don’t know what you’d call it, this “board” I guess, exists is dumb. Hollywood needs to be saved, yes, however, not in the way Trump thinks.

In a Truth Social post, Trump claimed that Hollywood has lost business to foreign countries and these men are going to help bring it back to the United States.

In reality, Hollywood is suffering because the industry is recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic, the strikes against streaming services and AI, and the ongoing wildfires in Los Angeles.

But aside from that, some things take more priority over “saving Hollywood from foreign countries,” such as focusing on the wildfires in California, climate change overall, and protections for minorities.

Within his first few days in office, Trump signed several executive orders, including one that planned to end the federal government's Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs.

After Trump signed the order, he ordered all U.S. Government DEI staff to be put on paid leave immediately before all the programs are shut down.

Despite being told in a sermon the day after the inauguration to “have mercy” on those who are scared of the new Trump administration, including LGBTQ+ individuals and immigrants, Trump came after the Right Rev. Mariann Edgar Budde on Truth Social for being a “Radical Left hardline Trump hater.”

Budde, who is a bishop at the National Cathedral, has been an advocate for the LGBTQ+ community. In 2018, Budde gave a final resting place to Matthew Shepard, who died from his injuries as a result of a hate crime in 1998.

So, instead of putting together a board of these so-called “ambassadors,” do what Rev. Budde said: “Have mercy on those who are scared,” and consider prioritizing protections.

I know Trump will never care about the gay community, but let this be my letter to the United States Congress to pass laws and override vetoes that Trump will most likely give.
